  • David Herbert Lawrence,born in 1885 in Eastwood
  • was an important and controversial English writer of the 20th century
  • prolific and diverse output included novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters.
  • Lawrence's unsettling opinions earned him many enemies
  • he endured hardships, official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life.
  • His works were heavily autobiographical and the experiences of his early years in Nottinghamshire continued to exert a profound influence throughout his life.
  • During his last years Lawrence spent much of his time in Italy making only brief visits to England, the last in 1926.
  • He died on 2 March 1930 at Vence in the south of France.
